David A. Kirby é Diretor do Departamento de Estudos Interdisciplinares da Universidade Cal Poly, em San Luis Obispo. Foi geneticista evolucionista antes de deixar a investigação laboratorial para se dedicar ao estudo da comunicação de ciência. A sua experiência enquanto membro da comunidade científica tem inspirado os seus reconhecidos trabalhos sobre a complexa relação entre ciência, narrativa ficcional e sociedade. É autor de dezenas de artigos académicos sobre este tema. Muitos dos seus trabalhos abordam a colaboração entre a comunidade científica e a indústria do entretenimento, incluindo o livro Lab Coats in Hollywood: Science, Scientists and Cinema. Explorou também a história das ciências psiquiátricas no cinema no livro Demons of the Mind: Psychiatry and Film in the Long 1960s. O seu projeto atual, Indecent Science: Religion, Science, and Movie Censorship, investiga como o cinema serviu de campo de batalha em torno do papel da ciência na influência da moralidade.
David A. Kirby is Chair of the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies at Cal Poly University-San Luis Obispo. He was a practicing evolutionary geneticist before leaving bench science to become a science communication scholar. His experiences as a member of the scientific community have informed his internationally recognized studies into the complex relationship between science, fictional storytelling, and society. He has written dozens of academic articles on this topic. Many of his publications address the collaboration between the scientific community and the entertainment industry including the book Lab Coats in Hollywood: Science, Scientists and Cinema. He has also explored the history of the psychiatric sciences in cinema in the book Demons of the Mind: Psychiatry and Film in the Long 1960s. His current book project, Indecent Science: Religion, Science, and Movie Censorship, will explore how movies served as a battleground over science’s role in influencing morality.
Erin Espelie
Os filmes de Erin Espelie foram exibidos nas galerias Whitechapel e LUX, em Londres, no New York Film Festival, no SFMoMA, no Jameel Arts Centre, no Dubai, no CPH:DOX, em Copenhaga, no Full Frame Film Festival, no Museu de Natureza e Ciência de Denver, entre muitos outros. É Diretora do Departamento de Estudos de Cinema na Universidade do Colorado Boulder, onde cofundou, em 2017, o NEST (Nature, Environment, Science & Technology) Studio for the Arts.
Erin Espelie’s films have shown at the Whitechapel and LUX galleries in London, the New York Film Festival, SFMoMA, the Jameel Arts in Dubai, CPH:DOX in Copenhagen, Full Frame Film Festival, the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, and more. She is Department Chair of Cinema Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder, where she co-founded NEST (Nature, Environment, Science & Technology) Studio for the Arts in 2017.
Isabel Macedo
Isabel Macedo é doutorada em Estudos Culturais pela Universidade do Minho e Universidade de Aveiro, na área da Comunicação e Cultura, com uma tese sobre migrações, memória cultural e representações identitárias no cinema. É Professora Auxiliar no Departamento de Ciências de Comunicação da Universidade do Minho e investigadora integrada do Centro de Estudos de Comunicação e Sociedade (CECS). Foi membro do projeto “Memórias, culturas e identidades: o passado e o presente das relações interculturais em Moçambique e Portugal” (2018-2022) e cocoordenou o projeto “Migrações, Media e Ativismos em Língua Portuguesa: decolonising mediascapes and imagining alternative futures” (2022-2025). É diretora da Revista Lusófona de Estudos Culturais e do Museu Virtual da Lusofonia, Unidade Cultural da Universidade do Minho. Entre as suas publicações destacam-se; “Exploring images of otherness through cinema: Analysis of counter-visualities in Portuguese films” (2023), “Cultura visual, educação e comunicação intercultural: grupos de discussão com estudantes no ensino secundário português” (2023), “O cinema como espaço de ativismo mnemónico: uma análise da produção cinematográfica com financiamento público em Portugal (2024), e o livro “Existir e resistir na sociedade contemporânea. Contributos para o debate sobre comunicação e cultura” (2024), trabalhos desenvolvidos em coautoria e numa perspetiva transdisciplinar.
Isabel Macedo holds a PhD in Cultural Studies from the University of Minho and the University of Aveiro, in the field of Communication and Culture, with a thesis on migration, cultural memory, and identity representations in cinema. She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences at the University of Minho and an integrated researcher at the Communication and Society Research Centre (CECS). She was a member of the project “Memories, cultures and identities: the past and present of intercultural relations in Mozambique and Portugal” (2018–2022) and co-coordinated the project “Migrations, Media and Activisms in the Portuguese Language: decolonising mediascapes and imagining alternative futures” (2022–2025). She is the Director of the Lusophone Journal of Cultural Studies and of the Virtual Museum of Lusophony, a Cultural Unit of the University of Minho. Her publications include Exploring images of otherness through cinema: Analysis of counter-visualities in Portuguese films (2023), Visual culture, education and intercultural communication: discussion groups with students in Portuguese secondary education (2023), Cinema as a space of mnemonic activism: an analysis of publicly funded film production in Portugal (2024), and the book To Exist and Resist in Contemporary Society: Contributions to the Debate on Communication and Culture (2024), co-authored and developed from a transdisciplinary perspective.
Rute Pereira
Rute Pereira é uma comunicadora de ciência portuguesa com uma sólida formação científica e mais de 8 anos de experiência em investigação. Concluiu o seu Doutoramento em Nanociências e Nanotecnologia em Maio de 2024, após se ter juntado à EJR-Quartz em Fevereiro de 2023 como Editora de Redes Sociais para a Agência Espacial Europeia. Atualmente, a Rute é Editora de Conteúdos Digitais, sendo responsável por tornar as publicações científicas compreensíveis para o público em geral, transformando-as em artigos, textos curtos ou vídeos educativos.
Rute Pereira is a Portuguese science communicator with a strong background in science and over eight years’ experience in research. She completed her PhD in Nanosciences and Nanotechnology in May 2024, after joining EJR-Quartz in February 2023 as a Social Media Editor for the European Space Agency. In this role, Rute is responsible for making scientific publications accessible to the general public by transforming them into short texts or educational videos.
Tiago Ramalho
Tiago Ramalho é jornalista de ciência no Público, desde 2022, onde escreve sobre tudo – porque tudo pode ter ciência. Está ainda a completar doutoramento em Ciências da Comunicação na Universidade do Minho, onde explora a representação da pseudociência no entretenimento.
Tiago Ramalho has been a science journalist at the Portuguese newspaper Público since 2022, where he writes about everything – because everything can have science in it. He is also completing a PhD in Communication Sciences at the University of Minho, where he explores the representation of pseudoscience in entertainment.
